Canyon Lake resides in the Tonto National Forest and is a wonderful destination for boating, fishing, camping, kayaking, and sightseeing. My boyfriend and I spent our 6 month anniversary at this place, and it was a wonderful time. We were able to reserve a tent campsite through Canyon Lake Marina, which allowed us to camp right along the edge of the lake. The sites come with firepits and picnic tables, and although relatively small, was perfect for the two of us.
After our first evening getting acclimated and setting up camp, we spent our second day by renting a kayak at the marina and venturing out on the lake for a couple of hours. We were lucky enough to witness a group flying some RC airplanes over the water and also had the opportunity to test our kayaking skills when some of the motorized boats created a little bit too much wake. Another one of the reasons we wanted to go to Canyon Lake was to check out the Dolly Steamboat.
The Dolly Steamboat is a sightseeing and steamboat cruise that gives tours of the lake during the day and in the evenings. We opted for their Astronomy Dinner Cruise, which was an absolute delight! At the start of the cruise, we were educated about Canyon Lake and the various wildlife. We spotted Big Horn Sheep and even saw a bald eagle. We were able to witness the beautiful sunset and then settle in for a delicious dinner and drinks on the boat. When it got dark enough, Dr. Sky educated us about the stars in the sky and pointed them out with powerful lasers. It was quite entertaining.
To this day, our trip to Canyon Lake is one of our fondest memories together. I hope to go back again, and be a little bit more adventurous by attaining a campsite at The Point which is a boat-access only camping area on the lake.
